Definition Essay

"People think of the loss of innocence as the meaning of loss of virginity. But this is far from true." This quote is from a short story "Marigold" by Eugenia Collier. The girl in the story manifests the idea that she has come of age and it was time for her to grow up. Like in the quote, loss of innocence doesn't mean that your virginity has faded away but much stronger and powerful. The sacrifice of virginity doesn't have to pay the cost. Majority of people think about the term "virginity" as in the aspects of sexual interaction, but not at all. I will tell you some examples of other information with the word "virgin" in it but have absolutely different meanings. Virginity can be defined in miscellaneous routes. For example, virginal forests virgin olives, the state of Virginia and cultures.
Virgins aren't weak but powerful and solid from histories till now. Do you know how the state of Virginia got its name? When the state was under Great Britain they named after Queen Elizabeth I of England, who was also named the Virgin Queen. She was known as a great queen who wasn't married for her entire life. However, we can't be sure whether she had relationships with other men. With great appreciation to the Queen, now Virginia is an essential state for the country. Virginia is also called as the "Mother of Presidents", because eight different presidents of the United States were given birth in this specific state. Now, Virginia is developing each and everyday with balanced economy. According to the Encyclopedia of wikipedia, "Northern Virginia (once the dairy capital of Virginia) hosts software, communications, consulting, defense contracting, diplomats and considerable components of the professional government sector." Of course virginity has nothing to do with a state of a country, but the different usage of "virgin" doesn't always mean women who didn't have sex.
In many cultures, women's virginity represents the honor of the family and a significant symbol. So if a woman fails before her marriage, it is a severe problem to the reputation of one's generation. In this culture, that is considered the action showing clear lack of self- control and patients but following the desire of enjoyment and satisfaction. When you go to your cousin's or friend's wedding, you can see the bride wearing a silky white dress which looks like a river of shiny milk from heaven and a veil flowing down on the shoulders with a silver crown on top. Well, did you know that the veil is a symbol of virginity? Majority of people are aware of the information but it makes the ceremony more sacred and valuable. Cultures, these days only think about the shame of females when it comes to the loss of virginity, and males would have pride when females have shame during the relationship. However, this kind of common sense is far from truth. The gender roles of 21st century has been balanced and the understanding between both opposite sexes is open wide, although fathers and the society is concerned more of the females circumstances. Especially in medias, TV shows and dramas show a lot of scenarios where people have one-night stand very easily and loose their virginity in a second with no shame. It gives a huge impact on the society, by brainwashing the significant of virginity. They have no respect and the symbol or the images of female reputations are lowering down. Now, we have to change and fix the ideas. In religions, it defines and represents the word "virginity" differently. It emphasizes the characteristics of purity and shows it through the mythical figures like Athena, Artemis, and Hestia. In Islam, women have to cover themselves and stay away from the interaction with other males until the wedding. The river between the male and the female are just too wide to connect easily. In Christianity, sexual interactions between two couples are taken seriously because they have to find a one that they can give part of their body to the other partner. The body is a temple that you have to protect and keep it clean. If you say virgin, there is a well-known woman who can be an amazing representative. Mary, the earthly mother of Jesus, is a virgin who didn't have sex but gave birth to Jesus, our king. The blessings and the selection of God made her special and till now, she's a respected woman for that. Mary is a pure and perfect example to all females because they go around with high thoughts of identity. In this essay, I tried to emphasize and change your idea of virginity. The society has ruined and brainwashed the pure definition of virginity. They are so focused on sex, dirtiness, and shame. However, virgins are pure and holy and can be used in other terms. Like the example of the state of Virginity, is clearly different from females or males "gift" from God. We are the ones to change and we are the ones to determine. We also have to remind ourselves that males are significant to be called virgins, because they are humans just like the girls. Virginity, it is a hard word to step ahead or to be close to, because we were being stereotype of the idea. By this essay, I wish that you can see the word as pure, powerful, beautiful and perfect. When I first picked this topic, it was hard and risky because I didn't want to mess it up. However, I've learned so many things have I had the opportunity to change my mind again.
